Creating Allowances on Custom Leave Types in Simployer One

Modified on Tue, 8 Sep at 2:23 PM

What is a custom leave type allowance?

Simployer One lets you create custom leave types for categories that don't fit standard absence reasons — for example, study leave, wellness leave, or other special absence types. For any custom leave type, you can add an allowance, which controls how many days employees are permitted to take per year.

An allowance includes:

  • A total number of days employees are entitled to per cycle
  • A month when that allowance renews each year
  • An optional strict limit that blocks requests exceeding the allowance

How do I access custom leave type settings?

To find the settings for custom leave types:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Time Off Settings.
  3. Select Custom Leave Types.
  4. Select an existing policy to edit it, or select Create Policy to create a new one.

How do I set the allowance parameters for a custom leave type?

Once you're in a custom leave type policy:

  1. Select Include allowance to turn on the allowance functionality.
  2. Enter the Total Number of Days — the maximum number of leave days employees can take within one cycle.
  3. Select the Annual Cycle Month — the month in which the allowance renews each year.

Note: The allowance resets automatically each year in the month you select.

How do I enforce a strict allowance limit for a custom leave type?

You can optionally enable Strict Allowance Limit to control whether employees can exceed their allowance.

  • If enabled, employees are blocked from submitting a leave request that would exceed their remaining allowance.
  • If disabled, employees can still submit requests beyond their allowance, and the excess is tracked rather than blocked.

Tip: Use the strict limit if you need to enforce a hard cap on a leave type (for example, a fixed annual quota). Leave it disabled if you want visibility into overages without preventing the request.
