Departments, Offices, and Teams in Simployer One

What are departments, offices, and teams in Simployer One?

Departments, offices, and teams help you organise employees in Simployer One, but each serves a different purpose.

  • Departments define your formal organisational structure.
  • Offices represent physical or geographical locations.
  • Teams are flexible groups that can span departments and offices.

Only users with the Owner or Admin role can create and manage these organisational units.

What is the difference between departments, offices, and teams?

Organisational unitBest used forStructure
DepartmentsFormal business functions such as HR, Finance, or SalesHierarchical. Can contain sub-departments.
OfficesCountries, cities, or physical workplacesFlat structure. No parent-child hierarchy.
TeamsProjects, product areas, regions, or working groupsFlat structure. Employees can belong to multiple teams.

When should I use departments?

Use departments for your company's formal organisational structure, department leaders, cost centre defaults, and business functions.

When should I use offices?

Use offices for geographical locations. Employees inherit the office's public holiday calendar by default unless overridden on their employee profile.

When should I use teams?

Use teams to group employees across departments and offices. Teams do not create reporting lines and an employee can belong to multiple teams.

How do departments, offices, and teams work together?

An employee normally belongs to one department, one office, and can belong to multiple teams. These organisational units complement each other rather than replace each other.

How is the organisation chart built in Simployer One?

The organisation chart is built from each employee's Manager assignment (who they report to), not from departments, offices, or teams.

An employee can belong to the Finance department while reporting to a manager in Administration. The organisation chart follows the reporting relationship rather than the department.

Changing a department does not automatically change an employee's manager or their position in the organisation chart. If your reporting structure changes, update the employee's Manager field separately.

FAQs about organisation structure

Can an employee belong to more than one department?

No. A department represents the employee's formal organisational placement.

Can an employee belong to more than one team?

Yes. Employees can belong to multiple teams.

Can offices contain sub-offices?

No. Offices use a flat structure.

Can teams contain sub-teams?

No. Teams use a flat structure.

Why doesn't the organisation chart change when I move an employee to another department?

The organisation chart is based on the employee's Manager assignment, not their department. Update the employee's manager separately if the reporting structure also changes.
